Sunday March 2 Hike Buescher State Park 10am Open to TOWNies and female friends, please. And of course, well-behaved dogs are always welcome to wander around with me. Entrance fee $5
Come join us for a 7.7 mile hike on the Buescher Hiking Trail. I have never been to this park, but why should that stop us? Let's explore it together, although...if there is anyone out there who has been on this trail (Nance?Sue?) if you could email me and forward some valuable information, I would greatly appreciate it!
Bring the usual suspects: hat, plenty of water, lunch (a snack's big brother), hiking shoes/boots, walking stick (I love my walking stick), sunscreen...depends on the weather how many layers to wear or maybe rain gear, you never know.
Located : Buescher SP is located 2 miles Northwest of Smithville. From State Highway 71, turn north on 153 for .5 miles to Park Road 1. For a map, visit: www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/buescher/media/pdf/buesloc.pdf
From the ranger office: take park road 1E around past the cozy circle camping area and park at the 2nd parking area at the trail head. For a visual, see link below. Length : 7.7 miles according to the map at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4505_057a.pdf
Estimated Time: 3.5 - 4.5 hours
Intensity: Well, since I have never been, I can't say from experience, but I can say that 7.7 miles is not for an out of shape person.
Please email Jenn directly at so she will know to wait a little for you. I look forward to exploring this sister park, if it is anything like Bastrop, I will fall in love immediately! Come join me in this exploration, and please, someone bring a camera!
We can talk about carpooling later, if there is an interest. And the Roadhouse is always a good idea for a second lunch, or snack. Just let me know, what you want to do, and I hope to see you on the trails. Happy Hiking, jenn
Wednesday March 5 Join Jenn for Hike Planning Meeting 6pm Central Market (located on 38th and North Lamar)
Howdy Hikers! After looking at my calendar, I realized it is almost March, how time flies when you are having fun! I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know (far enough in advance so you can pencil me in your calendar - until something better comes along, of course) that the time has come to gather, eat, and plan our next hikes. So please join me.
We'll eat first, drink a little, and plot. I am thinking about a stroll up and down SoCo, Enchanted Rock, and a nighttime ghost tour. If you can't make it to CM, shoot me an email letting me know where you would like to go/do/see/experienc e. I'm up for most things...most of the time. Let me know if you would like to help and rsvp to me so I know how big of a table to pull together. I hope it will be nice enough to sit out away from the covered porch so those of us that are hard of hearing (WHAT?!?) can listen, too. Last meeting was a great experience, lots of women with great ideas, who put a lot of outings on the calendar. Let's keep the fire stoked! RSVP to jenn.

Saturday March 15 Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve Outing 8:30 a.m.Members and guests invited; this is open to all who wish to participate, but no dogs.
THIS EVENT IS FULL. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT THE LEADER OUTING TO CHECK FOR CANCELLATIONS. THE OUTING LEADER WILL SEND EMAILS TO THE YAHOO GROUP AS CANCELLATIONS OCCUR.
Cost is $15 per person; ANY CHILD OVER 7 IS FULL-PRICE. KIDS UNDER THAT AGE CAN COME FOR FREE. They accept checks or cash (exact amount please!) BUT NOT credit cards. Repeat NO CREDIT CARDS Accepted! I will collect the fees from each person just prior to start of the tour.
TOWNIES and guests - I visited this very special place last year and I have been eager to share this with you, so you can enjoy it too! I was just able to finalize plans for a private tour for TOWN.
Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve is a 5,500 acre ranch that has been described as the largest habitat restoration project on private land in Texas. Bamberger Ranch is a private ranch and visitation is by reservation only.
A description of the tour from their website:
On this 3 1/2 hour tour of the ranch you will see the results of 37 years of habitat restoration. We will show you projects which demonstrate principles of good stewardship. You may also see dinosaur tracks, fossil beds, a herd of endangered Scimitar-horned Oryx, the "Chiroptorium" which is a man made bat cave designed to hold a million Mexican Free-tailed bats. You'll walk the nature trail and then enjoy Madrone Lake as you watch "The Rain Machine". Transportation is on the Bluebonnet, an open air trailer with a shade bonnet, so dress for the weather; and don't forget a hat! http://www.bambergerranch.org/
Deadline to sign up: March 8, but participation is limited and will be closed to participants once we reach the maximum allowed. We will need to have at least 20 people minimum sign up to have this private tour; please email me with the name of each participant and a phone number to reach you.
Meet at 8:30am. This will allow time for you to find the location, visit the porta potty at the boarding area and collect fees before we start our group tour. Tour will end about 12:30 p.m.
There is very little walking involved; you can even remain on the tour vehicle if you wish when we walk the nature trail.
I will send out a confirmation letter and map to those that have signed up
by March 10. Plan on taking a little more than an hour for drive time to get to the property, of course depending on where you are coming from. It is near Johnson City. I will recommend that we meet at the "Y" in the Oak Hill area and car pool as much as possible (more details later).
What to bring:
Camera (especially if we get close enough to the exotic, beautiful animals!; I did not have mine ready last time so I hope to get a photo this time)
Binoculars
Sunscreen
Long pants recommended
Sunglasses
Hat for shade when you are off tour vehicle
Water
Hiking Shoes for easy nature trail
No bathrooms accessible once we begin tour, so watch the coffee intake that morning!
Snacks to munch on if you think you will be hungry before tour ends
I was fascinated hearing the stories from Mr. Bamberger and I have requested that he visit with us but they are not able to guarantee his attendance. I hope that you can join me for the tour of this peaceful, beautiful place! Dawn
Sunday March 16 Hike at Barton Creek 10am TOWNies, friends, kids or dogs who can handle the hike and who consistently get along well with others.
This hike replaces the Turkey Creek outing; with limited rain I think Barton would be more fun.
WHAT: a hike on some side trails at Barton Creek. We will explore some side canyon trails, and also some parts of the main trail. There is a group of trees that make awesome smelling blooms and sometimes have lots of butterflies about. We can hope to see them.... if we cross the creek we can see a rock sofa, and a sink hole. If we don't cross we can see other stuff. either way, there are lots of little water falls in this stretch that are still flowing as of today.
WHERE: Barton Creek, trails end entrance. Take loop 360 to the Scottish Woods / West Bank traffic light. Turn west into the neighborhood. When the street dead ends, the trail head is on the right approximately 40-50 yards. Park somewhere on that street.
DISTANCE: We will hike/hang/look at pretty stuff for maybe 4-6 miles or 3-4 hours. Rudy's bbq is near there and we often go for lunch after.
INTENSITY: We will take a side trail down into the main creek basin. There will be some ups and downs and much meandering. On the way back up there is a 1/2 mile climb out via cardiac hill. It is nothing technical, but it is harder then the main trail.
Bring all the usual stuff: water/snacks/shoes you could get wet in if you want to dip into the creek please rsvp to me directly so i will know to look for you. Nance

Tuesday March 25 Monthly Meeting 6:00 pm
Pizza snacks at 6PM, meeting starts at 6:30pm meeting room at the Old Quarry Library located at 7051 Village Center Dr.
Kurt Hill , Manager of the Rowing Dock on Town Lake, will speak about rowing as a means of conditioning. He will bring a Concept 2 erg in with him to demonstrate the stroke, and then educate the group about the sport of rowing and its benefits. Many people do not know that rowing is a total body workout; it only looks like an upper body sport. Although upper body strength is important, the strength of the rowing stroke comes from the legs. Rowing is one of the few athletic activities that involves all of the body's major muscle groups.
Rowers are superb examples of excellent conditioning. However, rowing for beginners does not necessarily have to be any more strenuous than walking. This allows beginners to practice their skills and learn the stroke without being impaired by fatigue. After acquiring basic rowing skills, novice rowers can reach their target heart rate for burning calories-this means weight loss and muscle toning. Beyond all the practical reasons why rowing is a great sport, rowing in Austin is also scenic and beautiful from the cliffs toward Red Bud Island to Austin's skyline, all year round.
Join us and bring your friends to learn from Kurt!
Thursday March 27 Trikke Outing 7-9 pm
This event will be at my house/garage in South Austin. The time has changed and it stays light longer; plus for Trikke-ing, it's actually nicer once the sun goes down and the traffic is zero. What is a Trikke?? Visit www.trikke.com for a preview. This is LOW impact exercise, a good workout, and also great for those whose knees don't allow them to ride a bike any distance. I can only compare the feeling of the glide and the fun of traversing, it to downhill skiing -- seriously. We can accomodate the first 6 folks who sign up - so that you won't be frustrated and get enough time to play with it (we have two Trikke's; a regular size and an extra-large "Man-sized" one). No need to bring anything except make sure that you wear shoes that stay on (in other words, please don't wear flip flops if you want to try a Trikke.) Contact Pam.

APRIL
Thursday - Sunday April 3 - 6 FeatherFest in Galveston
This is not sponsered by TOWN Austin. More details. http://www.galvestonfeatherfest.com/index.php
Friday - Sunday April 4 - 6 Belton Lake--Cedar Ridge Park Outing with Kayaking Everyone is invited including dogs.
Join TOWN for an RV/tent outing at beautiful Belton Lake, Temple, TX--about 60 miles north off I 35.
Kayak several beautiful coves, hiking trail, bird-watching(I saw turkeys and seagulls today), bikes on roads, boat launch ramp, fishing piers. Something for everyone! Often water is clear, sun warm, and breeze cool. Lots of stars too, as this is rural.
Act soon, as this is a very popular park. I reserved site #6 in the First section. Make sure you get the EAST SIDE of the park-- Try for Campsites in the First, Third, or Second sections. We may have to spread out. The gates are coded for safety, so communicate that with latecomers.
This is a US Army Corp of Engineers Park--www.Recreation.gov-- Cedar Ridge Park, TX, Belton Lake May be easier to call 1-877-444-6777, especially for the first come, first serve sites. There are a few interspersed tent only sites, a nice double RV site ( # 4).
RSVP to Beverly.
Saturday April 5 Washington-on- the Brazos/Antique Rose Emporium Outing Family and Friends are welcome as this can be a fun family day! No dogs this time, please. More details as the date approaches. Entry fees are listed below.
Postponed due to lack of interest. There are a good few activities this weekend. I believe this one is a good one to share with kids so I want to reschedule. Maybe sometime in May before it gets too hot.
NOTE THESE CHANGES - We were there for several hours checking things out and by all means did not see all there was to see. So, I would like to cancel the Rose Emporium part of the outing and reschedule it for another day. For sure we will be in for a full day with just the park. Anyone that would like info on the Rose Emporium, let me know and I'll do my best to provide it.
There are a couple of museums on site.
Independence Hall - Revered as the site of the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836, Independence Hall serves as the historical focal point for the park. A representation of the original Independence Hall is available for daily guided tours. Unique living history programs are also offered. Trail signs and exhibits tell the story
of independence and the beginning of the Texas nation.
Star of the Republic Museum - The Star of the Republic Museum is situated in the park and depicts the colorful saga of the Texas Republic through 10,000 square feet of modern exhibits, audiovisual presentations and educational programs. In addition, seasonal exhibits, special events and interpretive demonstrations illustrating early 19th century life are regularly scheduled. The museum is open everyday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas through New Year's Day.
The museum houses:
• A collection of more than 20,000 artifacts and depicts the colorful saga
of the Republic period through modern exhibits, audio-visual
presentations, and education programs.
• A 1,000 square foot Discovery Room providing interactive displays,
involving the visitors through multi-sensory elements and activities.
• Seasonal exhibitions, special events, and interpretive demonstrations
illustrating early 19th century life regularly scheduled.
• A research library consisting of over 3,000 volumes, journals, and
magazines archived historical documents and public records, manuscripts
and map collections. The library is open by appointment only. To schedule
an appointment, please call the Museum's Education Department at (936)
878-2461.
My favorite is Barrington Farm - We talked at length with the volunteers
at the farm. With Anson Jones's (last President of the Republic of Texas)
daybook as their guide, the interpreters at Barrington Living History Farm
conduct themselves much as did the earliest residents of the original
farmstead. The Jones home is original; the outbuildings are replicas
constructed by Texas Parks and Wildlife using Jones's own journal and
drawings.
Also, we took the 1.6 mile hike. The path has been improved but was wet
from recent rains. We saw a good few bluebonnet plants so we may have a
beautiful show of wildflowers. Another thing we found was people with
their dogs on leashes. I did NOT see any dogs in the Farm area. I expect
the hike to take about 1.5 hours with children along.
The proposed plan is to meet in Elgin (for those of us carpooling) and leave for the park by 8:00am. It is an hour and a half drive. The museum and farm open at 10:00 but the visitor center opens at 9:30. There are exhibits and a gift shop in the visitor center.
This is where we may purchase tickets. Cost is:
$4 per site (Independence Hall, Star of the Republic Museum, or Barrington Farm) for adults.
$9.00 for adults for all 3 sites. Kids $3.00
$6.00 for adults for 2 sites. Kids $2.00
Morning - hiking and museums.
Afternoon - farm.
Lunch - we found a good hamburger place (105 Grogery and Grill) close by but it took an hour and five minutes from the time we walked in to the time we walked out. The park has a picnic area. Paulette has offered to cook burgers. We will also provide the fixings for the burgers. Please bring chips and drinks fro you group.
It looks like a wonderful place for kids. You may email me or call me if you want to go.
Check this link for camping possibilities. http://www.hikercen tral.com/ campgrounds/ 111902.html . I will send more info as the time gets closer. Contact Lisa.

Sunday April 20 Hike at Enchanted Rock 9:30 am
Join us to hike in Enchanted Rock SP (near Fredericksburg). Caravan/carpoolers meet at 7:30 AM at Albertson's in Oak Hill (where US 290 and SH 71 split)
The hike will go straight up a large outcropping of granite, so wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water and wear decent shoes. The terrain is fairly steep at times as I recall. There are some boulders that you can climb on/under, but children should be closely watched.
This hike is not suitable for kids under about 10 or pets. Medium fitness level required.
We'll be meeting at the former Albertson's parking lot at the Y at Oak Hill at 7:30 AM to caravan to Enchanted Rock SP. We'll wait 15 minutes for stragglers. That should get us there about 9:30 AM for anyone meeting us there. At this early time, it should still be cool out - that rock can get hot! Also, the park closes its gates when the parking lot is full, so we want to get there early enough to get in.
After we hike the dome, we'll likely walk around the base of the Enchanted Rock to see if we can find any plants to identify. There are a lot of spring flowers at this time. (Sabine was planning to discuss the geology, but her schedule might not allow her to attend.)
Please RSVP to Bonnie.
Tuesday April 22 Monthly Meeting 6:00 pm

Saturday - Sunday April 26 - 27 East Austin Volksmarch 10 am
Everyone is welcome to join in these walks...family, friends, kids, neighbors; slow or fast walkers; no dogs please.
Howdy Volksmarchers!
Come join the TOWN women and the Colorado River Walkers (CRWs - the organizers) on the last weekend in April for a walk through East Austin. Everyone is welcome to join in these walks...family, friends, kids, neighbors; slow or fast walkers; no dogs please.
On Saturday, April 26th join me for a 5k (3.1 mile) walk at 10am . We can start between 8am - 11am, but I have an aversion to waking up early, on any day really. We have to finish by 2pm, but that shouldn't be a problem with only a 5K. I was originally going to bring my daughter for this one, but she will be out of town (I know, sorry...she is much more interesting than me!).
On Sunday, April 27th join me for a 10k (6.2 mile) walk at 10am . It took me 2 hours to complete the Cap 10k, so I am a slow walker, but we should still make it before 2pm.
You can do either walk, or both, if you are crazy. The shorter route is perfect for beginners, not too long, but long enough to build up a sweat. The 10k is a bit tougher, for more serious walkers. I suggest comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and water.
There will be water and restrooms at the start/finish and at checkpoints.
Starting location: J. Snell Building, 1050 E 11th St, Parking is located behind the building, just follow the signs. From I-35, take exit 234C. Turn East on 11th St and travel 3 blocks to the start/finish line. The J. Snell Building is on the left side of 11th. There should be signs for you to follow.
Here's a little info from CRWs website:
East Austin is perhaps the most rapidly changing area of Austin. Its close proximity to downtown businesses makes it a prime target for developers, while they strive to preserve the distinctive character of historic and ethnic neighborhoods. New apartments and condominiums are replacing homes of a bygone era. Artists of various disciplines find inspiration and local interest as they work from galleries located in East Austin. Moving about is by public transportation, biking, and yes, by walking. The French Legation, the State Cemetery, Carver Museum and Huston-Tillotson College are a few of the many sites you will pass on your walk. The 10k walk is rated "1" and will be on city streets and on well-maintained park trails. A 5 Km route will be available. Start between 8:00 a.m. and 11a.m., finish by 2:00 p.m.
I strongly recommend that you go to the CRWs website: www.coloradoriverwa lkers.org
and click on upcoming events and then click on the link for the East Austin flyer to read more about this particular walk and more about the colorado river walkers in general. There is no fee for this walk, unless you belong to the CRWs and are doing these walks for credit. Give me a call or email to let me know you are interested or if you have any questions (this is a lot of info). Let's hit the streets and check out East Austin! RSVP to jenn.

Saturday May 3 Washington-on- the Brazos/Antique Rose Emporium Outing - meet in Elgin at 8am Family and Friends are welcome as this can be a fun family day! No dogs this time, please. Entry fees are listed below.
Trail signs and exhibits tell the story of independence and the beginning of the Texas nation.
• A collection of more than 20,000 artifacts and depicts the colorful saga of the Republic period through modern exhibits, audio-visual
presentations, and education programs.
• A 1,000 square foot Discovery Room providing interactive displays,
involving the visitors through multi-sensory elements and activities.
• Seasonal exhibitions, special events, and interpretive demonstrations illustrating early 19th century life regularly scheduled.
• A research library consisting of over 3,000 volumes, journals, and
magazines archived historical documents and public records, manuscripts and map collections. The library is open by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call the Museum's Education Department at (936) 878-2461.
My favorite is Barrington Farm - We talked at length with the volunteers at the farm. With Anson Jones's (last President of the Republic of Texas) daybook as their guide, the interpreters at Barrington Living History Farm conduct themselves much as did the earliest residents of the original farmstead. The Jones home is original; the outbuildings are replicas constructed by Texas Parks and Wildlife using Jones's own journal and drawings.
Also, we took the 1.6 mile hike. The path has been improved but was wet from recent rains. We saw a good few bluebonnet plants so we may have a beautiful show of wildflowers. Another thing we found was people with their dogs on leashes. I did NOT see any dogs in the Farm area. I expect the hike to take about 1.5 hours with children along.

Friday - Monday May 23 - 26 Kayaking and Camping for Memorial Day Weekend
Just a heads up that I have been doing extensive research on river trips for the Llano River/South Llano River (yes 2 different rivers!) and a good place for us to camp, for Memorial Day weekend/May 23-26. I have been speaking with kayak outfitters about doing a trip on Saturday AND one on Sunday (different shuttle companies/different rivers each of those days)....BOTH days would be open to anyone who has their own kayak or wants to rent, and the campgrounds that I am considering allow for rvs or tents. I need to get some things confirmed and then I will send out an email with all details. The reason I am letting you know now is that there are very few sites available at the campgrounds where we would stay, and you might need to get on the phone immediately to grab a site...if I could narrow it down to which one at this point, I would give you that, but I can't just yet. I hope to send that email out tomorrow nite so be watching for it if you are interested. Sorry but I will not be able to respond to questions just yet, plus I will not have email access from Friday to Sunday this weekend. I am pumped and it is going to be fun! Stay tuned! Dawn
Tuesday May 27 Monthly Meeting 6:00 pm

Thursday - Sunday May 29 - June 1 Galveston Sand Castle Competition This is open to all TOWNies, their spouses, friends and kiddos!
Please join Judy and me in Galveston for their annual sandcastle competition. I have been many years and it is fantastic! They have approx 80 sculptures spread over a mile and a half!
We are leaving on Thursday afternoon to drive down there if anyone wants to take off early. Otherwise you can drive over anytime Friday. It is a 4 hr drive from Austin to Galveston.
We will head over to see them building the sand castles around 11am on Saturday, will eat at the deli on the beach or you can bring a picnic if you like. Parking at the beach is $5/car so carpooling is recommended. Feel free to bring your beach chair, umbrella, hat, plenty of sunscreen, icechest of cold drinks/adult beverages permitted to the beach, and you might want to toss in a pair of flip flops because the sand gets really hot! They judge the competition early afternoon which is best time for photos if you want to bring your camera. We can play on the beach, wade, swim, boogie board, whatever. Afterwards, we will go back to hotel to freshen up and go out for a delicious seafood meal on Seawall Blvd.
For those that arrive early on Friday, we could go to Kemah for unique shopping experience and walk along the boardwalk they have, it's awesome! Or we could go to Moody Gardens - the botanical gardens and aquarium are amazing. We will take off Sunday after lunch to come back home. We can carpool down there for those that are interested.
We are staying at the Victorian and I have their room rates and those of several other locations nearby if that property fills up too fast. You will need to make your own reservations and the sooner the better. As soon as you RSVP, I will send you all the contact info and rates so you can decide what works best for you. I will be keeping track of who's going and where everyone is staying so I can coordinate our activities together or in small groups so please RSVP to RoxAnn.

Sunday June 1 Hike at Bastrop State Park 9am
Howdy Hikers! Come join us for this hike! If you have never been out to Bastrop SP, I highly recommend this hike. We will be hiking the 8 mile Lost Pines Trail. Everyone who can hike 8 miles is welcome to join in the fun; well behaved dogs are always welcome to hike with me.
Bring hiking shoes/boots, walking stick, hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, water and snacks (the usual suspects).
Time for completion: 3-4 hours - it really depends on number of breaks I need
Terrain: Moderate - nothing too intense, a beautiful rambling walk through the woods
Length: 7 - 8 miles Intensity: This is not for people who have to huff and puff around the 4 mile loop on Town Lake, if you are not in pretty good shape, I would say skip this one. Definitely not for young kids or older dogs.
We will not be speed walking through this hike (since I am leading it), but 7 miles is longer than it sounds.
Getting there: From Austin head east on Highway 71. Take the Loop 150 exit and continue east to the intersection with Highway 21. The entrance to the park is in the middle of the Y-split in the road. Once in the park turn left at the T-section in the road past the ranger station. Continue on State Park Road 1A until it intersects with State Park Road 1C. Turn right to continue on Road 1A and look for the parking area on the right soon afterward.
For more info: www.tpwd.state. tx.us/spdest/ findadest/ parks/bastrop/ . Please email me directly at jltrivette@yahoo. com so I know who will be hiking. We could even stop for lunch after the hike if anyone is interested. Since this is a state park there is a fee to get in - $4 I think? - but well worth the admission to this beautiful park. Unless you are smart and bought a park pass, that's the way to go! Happy Hiking, jenn
Thursday - Sunday June 5-8 Kerrville Folk Festival and Camping Who's invited: TOWN ladies, families, (though dogs are not allowed at the Festival. You would have to leave someone to dog-sit at the campground.)
This outing takes us to a campground on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Kerrville, Tx during the famous Kerrville Folk Festival. The Festival itself runs three weeks, and lucky you if you can go for the whole time: It is quite an experience! I got Kerrverted every summer back in the days before I got serious.
I have reserved a water+electric site at Kerrville Schreiner Park (formerly Kerrville State Park) for Larry and I. We can carpool 8 miles to the festival site in one or two cars. That will save us parking money. I notice that the Park also has cabins for those of you not wanting to tent camp, plus the city of Kerrville has motels and the YO Ranch resort.
What to bring: camp gear, etc., but, for the Festival: HAT, sunscreen, entrance fees (see site below), folding chair, sunscreen, bug stuff.
Note: There is a list on the site below what you can't bring to the festival. www.kerrvillefolkfe stival.com/ Other activities possible: kayaking, fishing Target time leaving Austin Thurs., June 5 12 noon. Time returning Sunday afternoon, June 8. Let me know if you're interested and I will keep you in the loop! Marilyn
